Pre-Verbal Trauma and EMDR Therapy

Parents holding their newborn baby close with affection

That’s where pre-verbal trauma work comes in.

There are some things we don’t have words for. This is a wound that needs a different type of holding. That’s where pre-verbal trauma work comes in.

there are no words..

A felt sense that something happened

It could be a felt sense that something happened, there’s something there or something keeping you stuck. You may have aspects of the story that is yours but you were too young to remember. Maybe your mom had a very difficult pregnancy with you or you had time in the NICU that you only have a felt sense of or have heard stories of that you suspect gets triggered in your life now.

Trauma that happened prior to language

When we’re working with pre-verbal trauma, we’re essentially working with trauma that happened prior to language, which is prior to age 3 yrs. Old. Examples of pre-verbal trauma include:

Two parents and their young child sharing a warm moment together at home
Mother kissing her baby indoors during a quiet moment at home
  • lack of prenatal care

  • traumatic birth

  • neglect/abuse

  • hospitalizations/medical issues

  • foster care

  • caregiver dealing with mental health and/or substance abuse issues

  • failure to thrive

  • separation from caregiver

  • poor attachment

  • unwelcomed pregnancy

  • poverty

  • intergenerational trauma

How do you know Pre-verbal Trauma and EMDR therapy may be right for you?

  • when you’ve been using standard protocol in EMDR therapy but things are not clearing as expected

  • tumultuous early life/attachment with caregiver

  • intergenerational trauma stories

There are some things we don’t have words for.

In the work we do together we’re following closely with the pre-verbal trauma and EMDR therapy protocol described by Sandra L. Paulsen, Ph.D. in her book, “When there are no words: Repairing Early Trauma and Neglect From the Attachment Period with EMDR Therapy.”

At an early age when needs are not met shame often develops. Let’s help you heal, together.
